This just in – Breaking news – HOLY SHIT!

Apple would have been crazy to try and stop 3rd party applications forever but in a milestone announcement today, Apple says they will have a SDK out in February… And the crowd goes wild!!!! On top of that the same SDK will work with the iPod Touch – Double Score. Here you go right from the horse’s mouth on the Apple Website… Thanks JOE!

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.

It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones—this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.

Some companies are already taking action. Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than “totally open,” we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.

We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.

So Apple casually announces modified iPhones might get bricked in the next update. And for those of you who don’t know Bricking = Bad! Bricking a device is in essence making that shiny uber device into a fancy paper weight or BRICK…

Apples says that any running of 3rd party applications voids your warranty. Sound familiar? Yup we called it over here @ AtA – There is going to be another Sony PSP style war heating up. Now lets remember what the Sony fanboys did when threatened with something similar?

They created custom firmware for their beloved device and I have been… I mean they have been running it since inception. All the good stuff from home brew and access to all the legit fanyboy goodness.

So have some questions Who’s working on it? All that money spent to unlock the shiny iPhone how much is it worth to customize it? Where’s that guy dark alex who has been keeping up with Sony?

Anyone got a iPhone dump? iPhone dev wiki dudes? Anyone? Buller?

I think the $20,000 dollar question is really…

If Apple knows about the potential issue did they do it on purpose? And even if it wasn’t couldn’t it have been avoided? I mean apple mentions the anySim app by name…

Who are you guys fooling? Certainly not us… Oh and it looks like there is a update coming out for downloading music directly to your phone…. Oh wait don’t do it!

Commodore here to bring you the latest in delicious chunks of sliced (hacked) Apple (iphone). It seems the guys at Twenty08 have released a native AIM client for the Iphone. Word is the client has the features you’ve come to love and expect from AIM. These features include:

• AIM Account Support
• IM Abilities
• Full Buddylist with Statuses
• Change status: Away & Online
• Suspend and stay online
• Sound notifications
• Popup Notifications.

I’m not sure the results are in yet, as to how well the proggy performs, but as we’ve seen in our Blurb Generator on the top of this page, if at first you don’t succeed, call it version 1.0

This just in from my lazy, insomniac news wire: The New Jersey kid who cracked the Iphone and set it free from it’s AT&T bonds is definitely reaping the rewards of accomplishing a feat that happens to be the hottest thing on the newswires everywhere. Now normally hackers do stuff every day that can be considered a feat of logic and programming. Some coders write beautiful code that some would consider a work of art. And some coders decide slyly to crack something that happens to have it’s own torrent of marketing, commercials, hype, glitz, glamour and utmost popularity in the ever-changing cellphone spotlight. As manufacturers clamor to make the next Razr, and now the Iphone, they sink billions of dollars into making sure these devices become household names. Enter Apple, who decides to create a phone that is completely closed source and gives no leeway for tapping into it’s full capabilities as an information tool. So this is basically the equivalent of leading the worlds most famous sheep to slaughter. Enter George Hotz, a barely mature New Jersey teen who made the fateful decision to crack this particular egg’s shell; the most highly publicized electronic “egg” in the world right now, and for the past few months. This fateful decision has propelled him to semi-stardom (2.0) and might just have set him for life.
Troy Wolverton of Mercury News writes on SiliconValley.com :

“George Hotz, who last week found a way to manipulate Apple’s new cell phone so that it will work on other networks besides AT&T’s, is trading one of the two phones he hacked for a new car. And, as Hotz would put it, it’s a “sweet” one at that, a new Nissan 350Z.

“This has been a great end to a great summer,” Hotz wrote on his blog.

The teen said he is trading the iPhone to Terry Daidone, co-founder of CertiCell, a Louisville, Ky.-based mobile phone repair company. In exchange, Daidone is going to buy him the car and will give him three brand new iPhones, which Hotz plans to hand out to members of his informal team that helped crack the iPhone.

As part of the deal, Hotz will have a paid consulting job for CertiCell. He plans to visit the company’s Kentucky offices later this week to demonstrate his iPhone hack in person.”

This news makes me very happy folks. It’s a testament to hard work, ingenious ideas, sturdy execution, and most of all impeccable timing. Troy goes on to write:

“Hotz initially tried to sell the iPhone on eBay, but said he ended the auction after it received multiple bogus bids.
Instead, he solicited a deal through his blog, which is how he hooked up with Daidone. Now he’s eagerly awaiting his new car.”

George Hotz, 17, confirmed Friday that he had unlocked an iPhone and was using it on T-Mobile’s network, the only major U.S. carrier apart from San Antonio-based AT&T that is compatible with the iPhone’s cellular technology.
While the possibility of switching from AT&T to T-Mobile may not be a major development for U.S. consumers, it opens up the iPhone for use on the networks of overseas carriers.
“That’s the big thing,” said Hotz, in a phone interview from his home in Glen Rock.

It’s high noon, Apple and AT&T — we really hate to break it to you, but the jig is up. Last night the impossible was made possible: right in front of our very eyes we witnessed a full SIM unlock of our iPhone with a small piece of software. It’s all over, guys.The iPhoneSIMfree.com team called us up to prove their claim that they cracked Apple’s iPhone SIM lock system, and prove it they did. (No, we don’t have a copy of the unlock software, so don’t even ask us, ok?) The six-man team has been working non-stop since launch day, and they’re officially the first to break Apple’s SIM locks on the iPhone with software. It’s done. Seriously. They wouldn’t tell us when and how they would release it to the public, but you can certainly bet that they’ll try to make a buck on their solution (and rightly so). We can hardly believe the iPhone’s finally been cracked. No, scratch that — we just can’t believe it took this long. [Straight Outta Engadget Mobile]

Oops, researchers just unveiled a pretty serious security vulnerability in the iPhone. More specifically, it’s Apple’s Safari web browser which exhibits the vulnerability. Researchers at Independent Security Evaluators have used the vulnerability to take malicious control of the iPhone from rogue websites loaded with the exploit. Once in, researchers have full administrative access over the phone allowing them to listen in on room audio or snatch the SMS log, address book, call history, email passwords and more — we’re talking full access to your phone. Researchers note that the only way to stay safe is to check those URLs and only visit sites that you trust (which isn’t very reassuring) and “may or may not be exploitable” from Mac and PC versions of Safari — the same vulnerability exists only they haven’t written the proof-of-concept exploit to test it yet. Apple has been notified of the vulnerability and a proposed fix with full public disclosure coming at the BlackHat conference on August 2nd. You listening InfoSec Sellout? So all the local NYC stores still have stock on the iPhone. eBay yesterday, around 7pm, had these things going for as much as $1200! Now there are so many auctions for .99 and no bids.

Do you think those bidders that locked in @ $1200 are really going to pay?

Gizmodo is having a contest sponsored by the Sci-Fi channel’s Eureka. They want you to send in your best invention – if you get selected you get – That’s right – A free iPhone.

I have this black and white marble composition book labeled inventions that I pull out every so often, but I have never been able to make that happen.

I have heard this question more than once today and about a gajillion times sinces the release date was announced. And I still stick by my answer. This is NOT the JESUS phone it is NOT magic and it will have issues with the first revision just like every other piece of hardware. Prices will drop features will be added fan boys will be sad.

If you have to be an early adopter go ahead and drop that wad of cash down to your ATT rep and get yourself a status symbol. But i will wait on the side lines testing the review models one revision/firmware at a time and comparing it to my Windows Mobile Device of choice for the week.

I think the one negative thing regarding the IPhone that has been sticking out in my mind is the lack of a SDK (software Development Kit). To me this means no homebrew, no community hacks , no outside developer 3rd party like programs. Without a platform to write code for the IPhone it will fall off. I mean come on it is an expensive device – would’t you want it to be able to do whatever you wanted it to??

So I guess it all comes down to one thing…
