So there we were on the scene the other night. AtA chilling with Philips as they were showing Fuji Film’s new Z10fd cameras on their beautiful Ambilight flat panel displays. Because the new camera’s line has so many vibrant colors it was a really good fit with the Ambilight.

Why do I feel like I’m stuck in a commercial? Oh wait – I don’t get paid…

We were impressed by both the cameras blog mode(Multiple picture size outputs) and Quick (3mbps) IR transfer. An open bar and good finger food made sure everyone was having a good time. Maybe too good of a time for some of the execs looking as whacked out as they did.

It’s ok – not like we are going to go and tell the whole world. Oh wait.

But anyway, the entertainment was cool and we didn’t get to stay for the whole time but the audience was having a good time snapping away. Check out some of our blog mode shots…

That’s me

That’s the IR Mode

It seems this little 7 mega pixel brightly colored camera can output blog size optimized pics, so yours truly doesn’t have to re-size in Photoshop or Gimp. That’s a plus, and it can transfer pics from one z10 camera to another via a sweet little infra-red port on it’s side. Check out our willing recipients:

We absolutely fell in love with the <strike>eye candy</strike> Ambilight effects on the new flat panels. The colors on these new TV’s were great and looked ultra realistic – then they showed us the color picking menu and how realistic it actually gets…

You pick which setting you prefer – realistic or vibrant.

That’s the Ambilight doing its thing with a purpleish color to match FujiFilm’s logo.

We had seen Ambilight several times before on older equipment. It was always a separate unit and it really didn’t do much – but whoa boy did Philips switch it up this time around. With the beautiful 42 incher we were looking at changing Ambilight colors (LED!) depending on what is going on in your programing. Think about it like this: If there are lights behind the television simulating natural light while you are in a dark room your eyes don’t have to adjust and work. That’s awesome! Now we can watch 20 hours of <strike>The Simpsons</strike> Educational Programing without the eye fatigue… Sweet. Don’t hold me to this but I believe the 42 inch was around 1500… Let me check and get back to you on that.

It has become an essential part of my admin tool-kit.

If it fell in there you should be able to get it out with this Magic Stick! (Edit: I got the magic stick…what what…sorry had to do it.)

It has happened even to the best of us. You’re installing that new rack mount server – hovering over a tight space, you’re putting in your last rack screw as it gently slips, falling down into a maze of wires and metal brackets. Doh! Now you’ll have to walk back down to the second floor just to get a single screw to finish the job. That is, unless you have the LED Magnetized Telescopic Rescue Stick at the ready. It can easily swoop down and rescue your rack screw from its terrible misfortune.

The Rescue Stick is shaped and sized like a standard pen, making it super convenient to carry or toss in your toolkit. A quick pull extends it to over 2 feet, allowing you easily reach whatever needs rescuing. The built-in LED turns on automatically when the stick is extended, perfectly illuminating those dark corners and crevices where small parts love to hide. The magnet is even strong enough to lift screwdrivers and other metallic objects.

There was no competition in performance over my little Latitude X1 in Photoshopping, rendering video and just in normal operations. But that could have been expected because the M6300 is more than double the weight of the X1.

At first I couldn’t find its 8.5 lbs place in my lap but after a day of working with it, it wasn’t a issue. When looking back on to my X1 screen I found myself missing the large bright screen. Mind you its not LED but that might be an option coming soon! The built in fingerprint reader and smart card reader are great options in business machines but stuff I didn’t use (well, I played with the biometrics a little… ). There are DVI, VGA, S-Video Out, Firewire, usb and the rest of the usuals. The side vents keep this baby cool and there was no lap burn after 3 hours of use.

For video we were were packing NVIDIA’s Quadro FX 1600M with 512MB of TurboCache (256MB dedicated). The Large 17″ screen was great for graphic and video work and watching DVD’s on it was DOPE! It is shiny and reflective, but not enough to annoy you like the Sony’s. I really like it. Pardon me if I am a little smitten with it . Dell offers the M6300 in WXGA+ (1440×900) and WUXGA (1920×1200) screen resolutions with TrueLife or anti-glare screen coatings. The sound coming out of this beast was also pretty impressive for a laptop. I did not use external speakers or headphones to watch my flicks. We got 2 and a half hours off the battery with DVD and WiFi a-blasting. Without media playback it was closer to 3 and a half hours; not bad for this beast of a screen.

Speaking of WiFi, this lappie has some magic new WiFi powers because it stays connected to my router without an issue – unlike my other machines. I was getting full wi-fi downstairs in front of my crib! I noticed stickers on the bottom of the laptop about WiFi changes and FCC warnings (see the flickr set) … Hmm, that could only mean BIG improvements.

The large keyboard makes me feel like I am right in front of my flat panel (reminder: must get bigger monitor!) As I am writing this I am beginning to think my mobile workforce might really appreciate these machines, as they are always complaining about their fat fingers on the small keyboards. Dell offers imaging services with the precision line to help out you admins eying this machine. The dust resistant keyboard is also a nice add-on, even though we didn’t see it mentioned anywhere.

From Reader AG 10/19/07: Config: 2.4Ghz with biometric scanner/4 GB RAM/160 GB @ 7200rpm/WUXGA 1920 * 1200 with true life. For people who don’t like to work with tiny fonts may consider a lower resolution display. Though 1920*1200 gives you a LOT of real estate but at the cost display size. You can lower the resolution but the display quality suffers. So, it’s better to get a native lower resolution in that case.

From Reader AG 10/21/07:

Feedback on M6300 (after two days with the machine). Please note my notes will have major references to Operating Systems (Xp and Vista) as a part of the hardware feedback.

Configuration : 2.4 GHz with biometric scanner/4 GB RAM/160 GB @ 7200rpm/XP 32-bit pre-installed/

It’s a very powerful machine; some may call it heavy but with all the raw force, it’s worth every ounce.

M6300 is supposed to be a “business” notebook and comes with ISV Certification, which means (as quoted on the Dell web site) “Application vendors run tests to insure the hardware platform and its individual components work without error”. If you have business-critical applications, then it’s better to have it come with Xp, and upgrade to Vista later when you are certain that nothing will break or you wouldn’t have to waste time dealing with compatibility issues. More on this comes later in the feedback below.

I got a separate copy of Vista Business 32-bit with an intention of dual booting. It’s important to have multiple partitions for dual booting. If your system comes with a single partition with all the disk space in that partition and you intend to dual boot, then you will have to format the system, create two partitions, install Xp in the first, and then install Vista in the second. You could use Partition Magic or something to avoid this, and partition the disk directly but success is not guaranteed.

[I configured my system with a 50% Primary / 50% Secondary partition while placing the order.]

4 GB of RAM is not usable by a 32-bit system and Xp “detected” around 3.5 GB. I wanted to test Vista and make sure all my application run on it before I invest time fully setting up Xp so I started the Vista installation. I inserted the Vista DVD while I was already booted in Xp. (You can also boot using the Vista DVD and take it from there). Vista installer gave me a “recommended” option of upgrading Xp to Vista but I chose a clean install. I selected the second (empty) partition, answered a couple of very basic questions and that’s it. I actually had a meeting with someone, so I left the system running and the installation completed before I returned, so I have no idea how long Vista Installation took. The stock drivers in Vista were not good for some of the hardware components like Graphics Card, NIC etc. So, the Dell Resource DVD came in handy. It has all the drivers and utilities for Xp/Vista 32-bit systems. I upgraded most of the drivers with the ones on the Dell Resource DVD as it has an “update” stamp of August 2007 and most Vista stock drivers would be older.

Setting up the fingerprint in Vista was a little challenge as the suite to configure the prints etc. (Security by Wave Systems) kept crashing. Once we install this Wave Systems suite, it takes over the Windows authentication protocol, and gives an option on how the user wants to authenticate. To make a long story short, after several installs/uninstalls, fingerprint reader chip driver rollback, spy ware software un-installation etc., I got it to work. By the time it worked, I forgot the successful sequence of events.

The feedback may be becoming too OS specific but I think users could face similar problems and I just want to share my experience. There were no issues in Xp as it was factory installed.

One problem I found with the fingerprint reader was that the reading surface gets hot (beyond the comfort range sometimes) when playing with the scanning options or installing/uninstalling related software; proximity to the exhaust vent may be the culprit.

The WUXGA 1900*1220 screen is brilliant. I have a 19 inch Sony external monitor hooked up to the DVI port, and the difference speaks for itself. The clarity and the quality are FAR superior in the Dell display. As I pointed in one of my earlier posts, the higher resolution quality comes at the cost of size of things. While I get a lot of space to place things but the font size of web sites, icons etc. gets very small, at least for my comfort. I may get used to it eventually but it’s definitely annoying. Folks may want to consider a native lower resolution display. If I fix the resolution from the adapter settings, then the quality suffers.

The DVD writer is a little noisy; not that I’ve used any quieter ones but just a note.

Some of my Xp-fine software/applications did NOT work on Vista. Symantec Antivirus 9.0 Corporate Edition was a major disappointment. I’ve had it for 4 years and I love it. I had to get the Vista-capable version of Zone Alarm security suite for my anti-virus/anti-spy ware needs. The newer Symantec products are Vista capable but use more resources. I lost Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.0, too, in an attempt to migrate to vista.

The speakers are great. After using Toshiba Satellite for a while, it was a pleasant surprise. It’s not an audiophile-level quality but very good coming from a notebook.

Hard disk is quite and fast. I don’t think M6300 has any 5400 rpm option but go for 7200 rpm.

WiFi is phenomenal. My machine came with Intel 3945 a/b/g and it connects like glue. I have not used a wired connection so far. It gives consistent 54 Mbps transfer rate.

My computer generated Vista Experience score is 4.8.

The keyboard is well laid out; gives sufficient palm support. I don’t use touch pad much (unless I’m really mobile, I’m always with a USB mouse) but it’s pretty responsive. Surprisingly, I didn’t miss the numeric keypad. Insert/Delete/Home/End keys may take a little getting used to; their peculiar location at the top is new, for me at least. Function key to turn on/off the wireless is nice; you can adjust brightness and perform other mundane tasks using the function keys.

Vista uses a lot of RAM. Running a minimal system will take up 1 GB. Add Yahoo Widgets (I didn’t like Microsoft Gadgets), Outlook, couple of browser windows, music player and you are approaching 2 GB. If you can get a Dell deal, go for 4 GB from day one. Obviously, you will not get M6300 to surf the web; so, invest in RAM. You may upgrade it from newegg.com or some other store but it may be a necessity for most users running Vista.

The 4 USB ports at the back is nice thinking; this way, you can hook up devices without having to see the dangling cables and use the 2 side ports for pen drives or other unobtrusive devices.

Gamers: whatever little time I’ve spent on games so far has pretty good feedback. I played Age of Empires 3 with all the game settings on “maximum”, enabled the shaders, full reflections etc. and the machine did not wince. I played at the maximum resolutions and the display was fantastic.

Reader AG 5 Days In:

Overall experience has been very good so far. Vista adopters, be careful as your “paid” Xp-compliant software may not function. I’ve seen some forums where people have rubbished M6300 against HP 8710 because of staid looks. I don’t know how “pretty” HP 8710 is but you will have to pay an arm and a leg extra for the same configuration if you select HP. Plus, I really DO NOT think M6300 is ugly or anything. It may be a personal opinion but for folks who will simply reject M6300 because of the looks should rethink.

I have pretty much covered my 2 day experience with the machine. I’d be happy to address any specific questions about the same save 3D Mark or other scores.

Apart from the problems I’ve already mentioned with Vista w.r.t. software compatibility issues, I couldn’t get my NIC card to connect to my router for wired connections. Wireless was fine. Maybe, there was something I didn’t do right with the drivers while loading Vista but it was a real PIA. I tried Linksys and D-Link routers but no luck. I disabled the IP6 protocol stack, too, and it still didn’t work. All this coupled with other issues had me return to Xp. Things may be different for Vista pre-installed as the Dell guys will, hopefully, make sure that everything works but it simply didn’t work out for me. If you are a developer or depend on your machine for bread-n-butter, I’d recommend Xp.

Regarding speed, Vista was not slow. In fact, save the boot time, which went a little up after I loaded security suite and other items that open at start up, Vista is pretty quick. Outlook, Excel, Word etc. open in an eye blink. Vista uses the graphics hardware (for gaming) better as well. There are some settings regarding shaders, polygons etc. that can be enabled in Vista only.

If you don’t already know, Vista has serious memory leaks problem. When you get your machine, try moving 4-5 GB of data to or from an external device (pen drive, external hard disk) or even between partitions for that matter. Guess what – Vista gives “Out of memory” error. Apparently, Vista caches the files or something, and there’s a flaw with this mechanism. It’ll eat all the memory and give up after copying some 20 odd files. I researched this issue and Microsoft is offering a hotfix “on request” i.e. you send an email to Microsoft and they send you a personalized download link with a disclaimer that the hotfix has not been thoroughly tested and we are not responsible etc. crap. They are working on this and will introduce the proper fix in a service pack.

So, it didn’t make much sense to fight with Vista woes. I spent way too much time on Vista (more than I could afford) – only to realize that Xp is the best bet for now.

From Tommy 10/26:

I got my m6300 today.
I would say the machine rocks. I hated the aero performance compared to my 7800gtx in Inspiron 9300.

this is with default drivers and lot of things running in background. So you can do better.

I saw the reviews above but for me nothing much to mention apart from it’s magnesium alloy body. I had WUXGA before and I had the same laptop (form factor) before so for me a seemless upgrade. I have been using Vista since it launched and I don’t know why people complain about it. I have found it so much better than XP that I would never go back to XP.

The FedEx guy handed me the box and immediately I felt how seriously massive this machine was.

I quickly brought it inside and started the unboxing ritual as you can see from the pictures below. This monster of a laptop is sporting a 17 inch 1920×1200 screen and an NVIDIA Quadro FX1600M OpenGL graphics card. This bad boy is serious! Wow that screen looks beautiful!

After using the Dell X1 with its 12 inch screen for so long this thing feels massive on my lap. The screen feels like I am working on a normal flat panel monitor. I went to go plug this guy in and noticed the huge power brick. Again the M6300 is not playing around.

This lappie rocks a 2.8 Ghz, 64-bit Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition X7900 processor from Intel in combination with that beautiful screen this laptop is a powerhouse.

Our demo unit has a 80 gig 7200RPM mechanical hard drive but you can opt for the 32GB solid-state drive instead. We got a DVD-RW with ultra speed but you can opt for a Blu-ray writable optical drive. The built-in card reader supports SD, MMC and MS Pro’s. The finger print reader is handy for those who need extra security.

For all you mobile fans you can cop a internal AT&T 3.5G/HSDPA card. But be prepare to crack open your wallet and fork over a nice chunk of change starting at <strike>$2417</strike> $1959 Seeming this lappie is more powerful then my current desktop – the word desktop replacement comes to mind.

But I am beginning to think I will have a hard time going back to my little X1! I am going to load up Photoshop CS3, blog as usual, watch a few flicks, download and do all my normal day to day activities from this beauty for the week. So if you are thinking of buying this laptop and have questions – now is the time to ask!

We got this letter this morning from Jill in No-wheresville.

“Alright let me start out by saying there is this woman who works in my office, who is SUPER annoying. She annoys everyone around her. She has her own office but comes over to “Visit” with everyone spreading the urgency to kill her. Now I don’t want to resort to violence is there a Techie way I can annoy her?”

We have something that sounds like it might be what you need. For $10 this will be hours and hours of fun loving entertainment / revenge We found this over @ thinkGeek:

The ThinkGeek Annoy-a-tron would be useless against an army of Snowbots, but it’s very effective at disturbing that guy in the sales department or your “friend” down the hall. With its thin design and embedded magnet for easy hiding, the Annoy-a-tron can be placed in a variety of locations. Select one of the three sound choices (2 kHz, 12 kHz, or alternating) and push the switch to the on position. Place it in a proper hiding spot and let the “fun” begin.

The Annoy-a-tron generates a short (but very annoying, hence the name) beep every few minutes. Your unsuspecting target will have a hard time ‘timing’ the location of the sound because the beeps will vary in intervals ranging from 2 to 8 minutes. The 2kHz sound is generically annoying enough, but if you really really want to aggravate somebody, select the 12 kHz sound. Trust us. The higher frequency and slight ‘electronic noise’ built into that soundbyte will make a full-grown Admin wonder where his packets are.

3 simple steps.

Turn on.*

Hide it.

Muahahaha…

Assuming you have done your part in selecting a suitable hiding location for the Annoy-a-tron, it will do its part to drive your co-workers slowly mad with its short and seemingly random beeps. And when someone does locate the Annoy-a-tron, they’re really not going to know what it is – which is almost as much fun as watching them search for it. Muahaha.

The Annoy-a-tron takes one CR2032 battery (included) and measures approximately: 2.5″ x 1.25″ x .3″. It will run for 3 to 4 weeks on a single battery.

Some Recommendations:

Don’t hide it inside of food (the chemicals in a burrito are known to be quite destructive to electrical components)

You should probably avoid the area near your local BOFH (we understand that most likely you are the local BOFH, but still please take note)

Yes, we realize you could buy a dozen and hide them all inside someone’s office (oh, did we say that out loud?)

Please reserve the use of the Annoy-a-tron for deserving subjects only (we’ll leave it up to you to determine who qualifies)

* Note: Please remember to remove the small plastic tab underneath battery.

Not convinced of the Annoy-a-tron’s evil powers?

Read this letter we received from a satisfied customer and be enlightened:

Dear friends at thinkgeek.com,

I recently acquired the “Annoy-A-Tron” from your web site. Actually, I acquired two, thinking that perhaps two devices might be necessary to truly splinter the minds of my friends and co-workers. How woefully did I underestimate this powerful tool.

I have watched this simple device transform an (until-now) mild-mannered colleague into a spitting, cussing, paranoid lunatic.

He has ordered all of the staff he supervises (not a small number) to locate the source of the dread beeping before doing anything else (but since they are in on the prank, they haven’t been much help). So he waits, white-knuckles gripping the edge of his desk, anticipating the next beep.

He has set a timer on his computer to track the duration between beeps. It hasn’t been much help.

My favorite quote so far, nearly bursting that vein on his temple as he shouted it: “That beep has been F***ING with me for HOURS now.”

He has called the facilities department to schedule a maintenance worker to investigate.

He speculates that “they” might be doing air-quality testing in the building. This beep must be some device in the ducts detecting dangerous levels of asbestos in the air. Or worse. Radon? Aerosolized mercury? Legionella spores?

The beep means something. What does the beep mean? Is it a warning? It sounds urgent, doesn’t it? It’s telling us to do something. But what? Replace a battery? Call the authorities? Evacuate the premises? Scrub ourselves with disinfectant and put on haz-mat suits and call our families to give them our tearful goodbyes?

I imagine that soon he will begin to take things apart. He will methodically dismantle all of the electrical devices in his office, creating an unusually precise metaphor for what is happening in his psyche.

I am reminded what a thin and fragile thread keeps us attached to sanity. Today, this tiny little device helped me break a co-worker’s mind, and I thank you for the sinfully pleasurable schadenfreude.

My best to you,
John
Seattle, WA

I have had this bad boy for almost 3 weeks now and it’s just about time for my in depth review. First of all I love this phone in all its 3.5g Glory. Everything I didn’t like about my Dash has been improved upon (almost). I am going to run down a list of what I really like and then follow it up with its weaknesses. Check back later in the week for applications, hacks and configuration settings…

The Good:

No touch screen.

Built in speaker for playing music without headphones is just so-so.

No flash on the camera.

No GPS – Is this so hard to integrate now? Chips are so small!

No upgrade on internal memory – Can we get a mandatory bump please?

I don’t know if it is my lack of sleep, after those conference calls at 3am this morning, but I was ROTFL. Don’t let me cloud your judgment, here is the story – you be the judge…

I was walking down Wall Street this morning on my way to work. It is normally full of people walking in straight lines back and forth doing their thing and imitating traffic. People don’t normally strike up conversations with one another. The only speaking you hear is a random dude on the cell phone, or the crazy guy talking to himself (50/50 shot that its a bluetooth head set or a crazy guy and its pretty hard to tell them apart).

So when I got tapped on the shoulder I was startled at first. Then I took off my bluetooth headphones, blasting a little old school JayZ. There was a Asian chick staring @ me. She was pointing at my phone and said: Can I touch your dopod? I am looking to buy this one.

Just like that… For those of you who don’t know this dopod is my new WM6 smartphone from China. I wrote initially about it here. She started asking me about HSDPA and if it worked for me here and how her phone didn’t. I had to get to work but she just kept on keeping on about the phone and how she wanted it. I was looking around for the cameras – maybe I was getting Punked. Fat chance and then it happened… She was looking at the phone in my hand (because you know i didn’t let go) and walked straight into a metal barrier – flipping over it and landing on her ass. Right out of the comics guys.

I tried so hard to help her up and take a picture at the same time but it didn’t work out – you are just going to have to take my word for it – it was hysterical. Just be careful out there guys she could have been a Ninja after my technology. Good thing she was foiled by that piece of metal!

Well, I bring you The True Tales Of End User Stupidity (t cubed o.e.u.s. – pretty catchy eh?) that will have you peeing in your pants or bring a tear to your eye if you cant stand to see gadgets destroyed. Maybe its not as good as the drink holder aka CD-Rom crushing someones favorite can of soda but its real… A middle manager chick, whose office we support, has been talking about the new Moto Q Pro and how she just HAS to have it. She finally shut up about it and copped it – We spoke with her and she said she wanted it when it originally came out but everyone told her to hold off “Until they beefed it up and added all the features,” – her exact words…

I set it up, fed in the exchange info, tested it and asked her:

“Do you need me to show you how to use it.”

“No. What do i look like?”, Was the witty response I got back. (sense a little sarcasm?) Some other stuff might have been said but I already tuned her out…

Long story short.. She brings me the device back, 3 hours later, with a cracked screen.

“What happened to your Q?” I said staring in disbelief.

“The stupid touch screen thing was not responding to my input. I tried my finger a stylus and then the back of a pen. Nothing worked and now it looks like it is busted. Can you fix it”

I continued staring at the Q’s carcass and said

“It doesn’t have a touchscreen.”

“Of course it does why else did i wait for this one to come out?”

How could I argue with that? We found out insurance doesn’t cover stupidity and this is a fairly common occurrence… The c.c rep was surprisingly sympathetic. I guess they don’t want to lose a new account while we were still in our 30 days. We got a discounted refurbished unit on the way. And I think this lady thinks it was my fault her fat fingers cracked the Q. What do you think?

They say a sucker is born every second well if that’s true, a Stupid end user logs on every nano second. Thanks for listening to my rant. I feel better now. Do you hear me Q killer?

I just unboxed my brand new Dopod HTC aka HTC Cavalier S630 and after a few tweaks my demo was FLYING on HSDPA ATT’s Network. I did a quick post on the Dash’s big brother a while back and it still isn’t released in the US of A. Yup this baby came right from China right down to the Chinese interface. But thanks HTC for including English in your ROM!

I found my old Cingular .cab file for my settings which worked instantly -DOPE! Right then I noticed My old E or G was replaced with a 3G… Then I enabled HSDPA and BOOM it turned into a H! We have achieved 3.5G boyz! And all I can say is that this coupled with the 400mhz processor… Is that I love it. What a huge jump. Almost as big as when I went from my 300 baud modem to my 2400 baud modem. Ahh Good times Good Times. Stay tuned for a full review. This is the near future of mobile devices… Prepare to be jealous of the first Smartphone with built in cut and paste functionality among other stuff!

_TheAdminWithANewToy_

Edit: This bad boy saw <del>987kbps</del> 992kbps on HSDPA and 87kbps on 3G… I seem to only get HSDPA outside in Manhattan. No go in Crooklyn or The Boogey Down. It also seems to jump back and forth between 3G and H while I am moving. I can keep on the fastest network – BY STANDING STILL! Anyone else have any experience with these networks?
