After a week with the Dell Precision 6300 it is right at home with my other laptops and has been my machine of choice while doing my daily routines. It’s magnesium alloy chassis is something new and an improvement over the M90 (it’s predecessor).

We saw a Core 2 Duo X7900 processor which clocks in at 2.8GHz (800MHz FSB). This bad boy supports up to 4GB of DDR2 memory while we were sporting 2gb. You can only hit the 4gb limit if you run with the 64bit os instead of the normal 32.

There was no competition in performance over my little Latitude X1 in Photoshopping, rendering video and just in normal operations. But that could have been expected because the M6300 is more than double the weight of the X1.

At first I couldn’t find its 8.5 lbs place in my lap but after a day of working with it, it wasn’t a issue. When looking back on to my X1 screen I found myself missing the large bright screen. Mind you its not LED but that might be an option coming soon! The built in fingerprint reader and smart card reader are great options in business machines but stuff I didn’t use (well, I played with the biometrics a little… ). There are DVI, VGA, S-Video Out, Firewire, usb and the rest of the usuals. The side vents keep this baby cool and there was no lap burn after 3 hours of use.

For video we were were packing NVIDIA’s Quadro FX 1600M with 512MB of TurboCache (256MB dedicated). The Large 17″ screen was great for graphic and video work and watching DVD’s on it was DOPE! It is shiny and reflective, but not enough to annoy you like the Sony’s. I really like it. Pardon me if I am a little smitten with it :) . Dell offers the M6300 in WXGA+ (1440×900) and WUXGA (1920×1200) screen resolutions with TrueLife or anti-glare screen coatings. The sound coming out of this beast was also pretty impressive for a laptop. I did not use external speakers or headphones to watch my flicks. We got 2 and a half hours off the battery with DVD and WiFi a-blasting. Without media playback it was closer to 3 and a half hours; not bad for this beast of a screen.

Speaking of WiFi, this lappie has some magic new WiFi powers because it stays connected to my router without an issue – unlike my other machines. I was getting full wi-fi downstairs in front of my crib! I noticed stickers on the bottom of the laptop about WiFi changes and FCC warnings (see the flickr set) … Hmm, that could only mean BIG improvements.

The large keyboard makes me feel like I am right in front of my flat panel (reminder: must get bigger monitor!) As I am writing this I am beginning to think my mobile workforce might really appreciate these machines, as they are always complaining about their fat fingers on the small keyboards. Dell offers imaging services with the precision line to help out you admins eying this machine. The dust resistant keyboard is also a nice add-on, even though we didn’t see it mentioned anywhere.

The solid state drives were not available to me at the time of review but you can only imagine it would boost performance (and cost! ouch) Mobile broadband is available from ATT for you mobile road warriors not up on tethering.

Some people wrote in about Game testing – I was unable to do it, but if you have some other graphic card benchmarks you want me to run give a holler. Let me know in the comments. I will hold onto the machine for a few more days to answer your questions – HIT US UP!

From Reader AG 10/21/07:

Feedback on M6300 (after two days with the machine). Please note my notes will have major references to Operating Systems (Xp and Vista) as a part of the hardware feedback.

Configuration : 2.4 GHz with biometric scanner/4 GB RAM/160 GB @ 7200rpm/XP 32-bit pre-installed/

It’s a very powerful machine; some may call it heavy but with all the raw force, it’s worth every ounce.

M6300 is supposed to be a “business” notebook and comes with ISV Certification, which means (as quoted on the Dell web site) “Application vendors run tests to insure the hardware platform and its individual components work without error”. If you have business-critical applications, then it’s better to have it come with Xp, and upgrade to Vista later when you are certain that nothing will break or you wouldn’t have to waste time dealing with compatibility issues. More on this comes later in the feedback below.

I got a separate copy of Vista Business 32-bit with an intention of dual booting. It’s important to have multiple partitions for dual booting. If your system comes with a single partition with all the disk space in that partition and you intend to dual boot, then you will have to format the system, create two partitions, install Xp in the first, and then install Vista in the second. You could use Partition Magic or something to avoid this, and partition the disk directly but success is not guaranteed.

[I configured my system with a 50% Primary / 50% Secondary partition while placing the order.]

4 GB of RAM is not usable by a 32-bit system and Xp “detected” around 3.5 GB. I wanted to test Vista and make sure all my application run on it before I invest time fully setting up Xp so I started the Vista installation. I inserted the Vista DVD while I was already booted in Xp. (You can also boot using the Vista DVD and take it from there). Vista installer gave me a “recommended” option of upgrading Xp to Vista but I chose a clean install. I selected the second (empty) partition, answered a couple of very basic questions and that’s it. I actually had a meeting with someone, so I left the system running and the installation completed before I returned, so I have no idea how long Vista Installation took. The stock drivers in Vista were not good for some of the hardware components like Graphics Card, NIC etc. So, the Dell Resource DVD came in handy. It has all the drivers and utilities for Xp/Vista 32-bit systems. I upgraded most of the drivers with the ones on the Dell Resource DVD as it has an “update” stamp of August 2007 and most Vista stock drivers would be older.

Setting up the fingerprint in Vista was a little challenge as the suite to configure the prints etc. (Security by Wave Systems) kept crashing. Once we install this Wave Systems suite, it takes over the Windows authentication protocol, and gives an option on how the user wants to authenticate. To make a long story short, after several installs/uninstalls, fingerprint reader chip driver rollback, spy ware software un-installation etc., I got it to work. By the time it worked, I forgot the successful sequence of events.

The feedback may be becoming too OS specific but I think users could face similar problems and I just want to share my experience. There were no issues in Xp as it was factory installed.

One problem I found with the fingerprint reader was that the reading surface gets hot (beyond the comfort range sometimes) when playing with the scanning options or installing/uninstalling related software; proximity to the exhaust vent may be the culprit.

The WUXGA 1900*1220 screen is brilliant. I have a 19 inch Sony external monitor hooked up to the DVI port, and the difference speaks for itself. The clarity and the quality are FAR superior in the Dell display. As I pointed in one of my earlier posts, the higher resolution quality comes at the cost of size of things. While I get a lot of space to place things but the font size of web sites, icons etc. gets very small, at least for my comfort. I may get used to it eventually but it’s definitely annoying. Folks may want to consider a native lower resolution display. If I fix the resolution from the adapter settings, then the quality suffers.

The DVD writer is a little noisy; not that I’ve used any quieter ones but just a note.

Some of my Xp-fine software/applications did NOT work on Vista. Symantec Antivirus 9.0 Corporate Edition was a major disappointment. I’ve had it for 4 years and I love it. I had to get the Vista-capable version of Zone Alarm security suite for my anti-virus/anti-spy ware needs. The newer Symantec products are Vista capable but use more resources. I lost Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.0, too, in an attempt to migrate to vista.

The speakers are great. After using Toshiba Satellite for a while, it was a pleasant surprise. It’s not an audiophile-level quality but very good coming from a notebook.

Hard disk is quite and fast. I don’t think M6300 has any 5400 rpm option but go for 7200 rpm.

WiFi is phenomenal. My machine came with Intel 3945 a/b/g and it connects like glue. I have not used a wired connection so far. It gives consistent 54 Mbps transfer rate.

My computer generated Vista Experience score is 4.8.

The keyboard is well laid out; gives sufficient palm support. I don’t use touch pad much (unless I’m really mobile, I’m always with a USB mouse) but it’s pretty responsive. Surprisingly, I didn’t miss the numeric keypad. Insert/Delete/Home/End keys may take a little getting used to; their peculiar location at the top is new, for me at least. Function key to turn on/off the wireless is nice; you can adjust brightness and perform other mundane tasks using the function keys.

Vista uses a lot of RAM. Running a minimal system will take up 1 GB. Add Yahoo Widgets (I didn’t like Microsoft Gadgets), Outlook, couple of browser windows, music player and you are approaching 2 GB. If you can get a Dell deal, go for 4 GB from day one. Obviously, you will not get M6300 to surf the web; so, invest in RAM. You may upgrade it from newegg.com or some other store but it may be a necessity for most users running Vista.

The 4 USB ports at the back is nice thinking; this way, you can hook up devices without having to see the dangling cables and use the 2 side ports for pen drives or other unobtrusive devices.

Gamers: whatever little time I’ve spent on games so far has pretty good feedback. I played Age of Empires 3 with all the game settings on “maximum”, enabled the shaders, full reflections etc. and the machine did not wince. I played at the maximum resolutions and the display was fantastic.

Reader AG 5 Days In:

Overall experience has been very good so far. Vista adopters, be careful as your “paid” Xp-compliant software may not function. I’ve seen some forums where people have rubbished M6300 against HP 8710 because of staid looks. I don’t know how “pretty” HP 8710 is but you will have to pay an arm and a leg extra for the same configuration if you select HP. Plus, I really DO NOT think M6300 is ugly or anything. It may be a personal opinion but for folks who will simply reject M6300 because of the looks should rethink.

I have pretty much covered my 2 day experience with the machine. I’d be happy to address any specific questions about the same save 3D Mark or other scores.

Apart from the problems I’ve already mentioned with Vista w.r.t. software compatibility issues, I couldn’t get my NIC card to connect to my router for wired connections. Wireless was fine. Maybe, there was something I didn’t do right with the drivers while loading Vista but it was a real PIA. I tried Linksys and D-Link routers but no luck. I disabled the IP6 protocol stack, too, and it still didn’t work. All this coupled with other issues had me return to Xp. Things may be different for Vista pre-installed as the Dell guys will, hopefully, make sure that everything works but it simply didn’t work out for me. If you are a developer or depend on your machine for bread-n-butter, I’d recommend Xp.

Regarding speed, Vista was not slow. In fact, save the boot time, which went a little up after I loaded security suite and other items that open at start up, Vista is pretty quick. Outlook, Excel, Word etc. open in an eye blink. Vista uses the graphics hardware (for gaming) better as well. There are some settings regarding shaders, polygons etc. that can be enabled in Vista only.

If you don’t already know, Vista has serious memory leaks problem. When you get your machine, try moving 4-5 GB of data to or from an external device (pen drive, external hard disk) or even between partitions for that matter. Guess what – Vista gives “Out of memory” error. Apparently, Vista caches the files or something, and there’s a flaw with this mechanism. It’ll eat all the memory and give up after copying some 20 odd files. I researched this issue and Microsoft is offering a hotfix “on request” i.e. you send an email to Microsoft and they send you a personalized download link with a disclaimer that the hotfix has not been thoroughly tested and we are not responsible etc. crap. They are working on this and will introduce the proper fix in a service pack.

So, it didn’t make much sense to fight with Vista woes. I spent way too much time on Vista (more than I could afford) – only to realize that Xp is the best bet for now.

From Tommy 10/26:

I got my m6300 today.
I would say the machine rocks. I hated the aero performance compared to my 7800gtx in Inspiron 9300.

Long waited 3dmark scores.

3dmark2005 9994
3dmark2006 4807

this is with default drivers and lot of things running in background. So you can do better.

I saw the reviews above but for me nothing much to mention apart from it’s magnesium alloy body. I had WUXGA before and I had the same laptop (form factor) before so for me a seemless upgrade. I have been using Vista since it launched and I don’t know why people complain about it. I have found it so much better than XP that I would never go back to XP.

People who bash Vista just doesn’t want change in life.

Screen is 10-15% brighter than my 9300. Same resolution so it is no change for me.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Outstanding review. First one I’ve found online. Based on this review, I just ordered one! The ship date reports November, but it’s worth the wait.

    -CS

  2. Karl L. Gechlik

Great CS! Keep us updated about when you get it and what you think. We are very interested.

  3. colin

Hi, thanks for the review. I haven’t seen any other reviews for this notebook at all up til now. I ordered this notebook a few weeks ago and am still waiting for it to ship. Hopefully I won’t be waiting too long… I honestly can’t wait to get my hands on it! (Oct 18th estimate… fingers crossed..)

You could maybe post some 3dMark scores if you have the time. I see the QuadroFX 1600m is about on par with the mobile Geforce 8700GT, clock-for-clock, though the question is how well the drivers perform in game.

  4. Karl L. Gechlik

No problem Colin thats what we are here for. Is their a standard benchmark test for the 3dMark Scores? Hit me with a URL and I will run them for you.

  5. DJ YoMoMz

    I just bought one!

  6. Anonymous

One of the factors in M6300 shipping delays is the wireless card. The triband wireless card a/g/n is not ready available, and delays the shipping. If you opt for the dual-band card (a/g), that may expedite things. Folks may want to speak with their CSR’s, and check if the manufacturing build is not complete and if the tri-band wireless card is really the source of the delay.

    -AG

  7. colin

My CSR also said the fingerprint reader might delay my order… obviously I chose not to get one. Neither did I get the draft-n wireless card, which is lucky for me if what you say is true.

Karl, you can get 3dmark from here. Standard “gaming” benchmark programs. People often like to see the ‘05 and ‘06 scores.

  8. Anonymous

The draft-n wireless card only supports the 5 Ghz frequency, which means the user has to get a “n” band access-point first.

Please keep this in mind while ordering the machine. If someone is very keen on getting the “n” band card, then either get the a/g/n card (rather than the pure draft-n card) or make sure you can get hold of a “n” band access-point.

    -AG

  9. Anonymous

I have a pre-n router will it connect? And I would like the 3d results as well if you can please,

  10. Karl L. Gechlik

Yes the N draft internal wifi works with my pre-n router (Wonderfully) as for the 3d tests I will give them a go and post my findings asap… Stay tuned and thanks for all the wonderful emails! You guys rock!

  11. Karl L. Gechlik

Looking back i am connecting @ 54g and I have a a/b/g card in mine but it stays @ a steady 54g. As for the 3dMark its downloading now (and slowly @ that…) Stay tuned laptop fans we will be right back.

  12. colin

Brilliant. As feared, I got the email today…

“Due to the popularity of the product you have ordered there has been a delay at our suppliers…”

    New EDD is Nov. 5th.

I don’t know how they manage to be so slow. I ordered this on the 29th of Sep.

  13. Adrian

    I got the same email:

“Due to the popularity of the product you have ordered there has been a delay at our suppliers…”

Moving the Est del date now to 23 November. I ordered on Sep 28th and original EDD was 17-Oct. Called my CSR and they said they thought the delay was due to lack of LCDs. They would try to adhere to the new date but couldn’t promise anything…

I ordered the X7900 with 4GB and 200 HD, so I guess the X7900 could be to blame as well. Anyone else actually had one shipped yet?

  14. Rhonda

I got the same email but got my machine yesterday!

  15. Anonymous

Rhonda, do share your experience with us. Any OS crashing, driver problems or hardware faults etc.?

    -AG

  16. Rhonda

I used it into the wee hours of the morning and so far all I have to save is I love it. No problems yet. I will keep you posted. This is a very nice site. Good Luck CS on yours and where are you from?

  17. colin

Yes my CSR said it was due to the LCD panel too. I hear it is a problem with many laptop makers. Alienware say the high-res 17inch panels delay their flagship model by up to 4 weeks as well. So, we’re not alone.

I have seen many cases (on some forums, and of course, rhonda here) of people getting delay emails and still receiving their orders on time or well before their new ship date, so there is still some hope. In my case, my CSR says he can guarantee it will arrive before the month end. Of course, he also guaranteed that it would arrive before the 18th… so it’s not much to go on.

In my case I have a T7700, 2GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm HDD. And of course the culprit WUXGA screen.

  18. Todd

I got my email and confirmed with c.s. as well. That really sucks I was supposed to have it for me birthday. wifey will not be happy with that. at least i know i am not alone.

  19. colin

Yes, there are quite a few of us it seems.

Well, now is your chance to try and get some compensation from them. I got them to throw in a backpack for me so far, which is handy. But you might be able to ask for something pricier–a spare battery or the likes.

  20. Prophet

I am going to try right now Collin. thanks I wonder if I get rid of the finger print reader and n card will it come quicker?

  21. colin

Yeah check with your sales rep. It might help, though it does look my LCD panels are the main problem right now. Should definitely check… wouldn’t want to finally get your LCD and still be waiting on something else…

  22. Ken Kaniff

Colin thanks for the heads up that is a great idea. i got my email this morning just like you guys and it will be Nov 8th before I get my baby.(whimpers and cries a little)

  23. Adrian

Just after I ordered mine (with Vista Business 32) I called my CSR to try and change it to Windows XP and they said that any change at all in the order means it becomes a “new order” and thus goes back to the end of the queue with a change in the delivery time. Seems crazy when all I was asking for was a different operating system. As it hadn’t even gone into production then, what difference could a different OS make?

Rhonda, could you add where you are (US/UK or wherever) and what was your est del date and actual? Also, did you get it with Vista or XP? I am in the UK and when I ordered it XP was not an option on the site. Visiting it today, Vista does not seem to be an option now, as it only shows XP as the offered OS. Strange.

    Cheers!

  24. Anonymous

Adrian, it’s not a very sensible business practice but that’s what most companies do.

However, if the order is stuck in production because of non-availability of a particular part/component, then the CSR *should ideally* call the customer and apprise him/her of the situation AND offer a substitute for that component [upgrade (maybe at additional cost) or downgrade] to expedite the production.

My a/g/n card alone would have added 30 days to the production. So, my CSR offered a downgrade to a/g, and I accepted. I’m still waiting for my machine to be delivered though.

    -AG

  25. Adrian

Thanks AG. Has anyone found any sniff of a review for this machine other than this? I would have thought Dell would have placed some review machines out there, considering its been on the streets for a while now.

  26. Anonymous

I couldn’t find another review any wherez thank you. Mine is delayed at well and i guess i will have to call in and request someone to tell me how to reconfigure it so I can has it faster. are usa people getting theres already

  27. Bill

Has anyone attempted to put Vista x64 on this M6300 and get the Broadcom Gigabit card working?

I have been back and forth with Dell and Broadcom, and am starting to think its hopeless…

    TIA

  28. AG

I got my machine today! I called Dell Installation help line to check if I can open the package without violating/voiding the warranty, and was told to refrain from doing so.

The installation person will pay an on site visit on Monday or Tuesday. Imagine having the M6300 packed in a box in front of you and not being able to lay your hands on it for the next 2-3 days. Excruciating.

  29. AG

    Bill,

Neither Dell nor major parts manufacturers fully support 64-bit systems, yet. Not trying to put you off or anything but I’ve researched this a lot and have not been able to locate any resource on an operational 64 bit OS with ALL the drivers working.

This is one of the reasons Dell doesn’t provide Vista 64-bit pre-installed.

    -AG

  30. Karl L. Gechlik

@AG Silly me I think I am out of the loop – what do you mean violate/voiding your warranty by opening the box??

I really hope that was a joke! What do you need the tech to do??

@Bill you will prob. have better luck looking for a driver on the forums instead of waiting for dell or broadcomm to fix it! They will wind up sending you a different NIC! Watch

I have 63 emails from various people who have been delayed. 11 of them got their machines today!

    So there is some hope!

  31. Bill

Hey, thanks for the quick responses…

Well, for anyone attempting the same as me, i can tell you practically all the drivers work, aside from the NIC, and two of the card readers (xD, and something else).

Im not really concerned with the card readers, but it would have been nice to get the gigabit working for in the office, and Broadcom support made it seem like it should…

If anyone has any other details on this please post, i would definatley appreciate it…

    Thanks, again.

  32. colin

Well I’m still waiting on mine. It’s a good sign that people are getting their shipments though! I’m in the UK… don’t know if it’s better or worse over here.

But that’s not so bad I guess. I need to be cramming on a research paper right now–if I had a new toy I would never get any work done!

  33. Jay

What is AG waiting for a tech for? Mine just arrived and I just opened it did i void some kind of warranty????????????????

  34. Tommy

Folks, I ordered mine on 16th October and EDD is Nov 8th. Got a free backpack and free next day shipping. I see people getting laptops already but still no sign for 3dmark scores. Please I can’t wait to see it. I got mine with X7900/2GB/120GB/WUXGA/N

    Thanks,
    Bhavya Desai

  35. AG

Fellas, sorry about the confusion. By voiding the warranty, I meant if a component is missing (CD/manual etc.), then I *may not* have a claim as the package was opened without the Dell guy. The probability of this happening is low though.

However, I opened the package, and fortunately, nothing was missing. I am in the process of setting up the M6300 with all the tools/softwares etc. So far, I’m pleased with it.

    Config: 2.4Ghz with biometric scanner/4 GB RAM/160 GB @ 7200rpm/WUXGA 1920 * 1200 with true life.

For people who don’t like to work with tiny fonts may consider a lower resolution display. Though 1920*1200 gives you a LOT of real estate but at the cost display size. You can lower the resolution but the display quality suffers. So, it’s better to get a native lower resolution in that case.

    -AG

  36. Karl L. Gechlik

@AG We would love to add a few paragraphs to the review from you!

Care to contribute? I will add your intial comments regarding resolution and fonts!

  37. AG

Sure, Karl. Give me a couple of days to get everything setup etc.

  38. VIP

hey tommy i couldnt get them to give me a back pack i got a $50 credit toward purchase. what did u say to them?

  39. Tommy

My Laptop was priced at 4000$ and he said he can give me 100$ cash back. I didn’t want that as it was corporate account and I opted for similar amount goodies. May be they have limits. anything above 4000 would be 100$ and less may be 50$.

AG can you please download and run 3dmark. I want to see graphics power of this beast.

    Tommy

  40. VIP!

great Tommy fast respons. Ok i dont feel as bad i barely broke the 3 grand mark and i wanted the $$$ the 644 above by annonomus i thought was a 3dMark score . maybe i am wrong

  41. CS

Mine just got here and there is no Operating system I am on hold now. can you imagine no freaking os???????????????????????? I AM MAD!

  42. Tommy

AG, 644 is way less score. My current Inspiron 9300 with 7800GTX is pumping 3600 in 3dmark06. I think this beast is going to break 4500 atleast. I see all sort of problems here. People without OS please get back as much as possible from dell. What a shameful mistake. NO OS. What are you suppose to do with it? Most imp is you can’t even order online with out OS. You wouldhave to call your Sales rep. I have done that before. Did you call and place the order? If so than your sales rep is the culprit.

I haven’t had a chance to run 3d mark or other scores. Karl, can you take care of this?

Gamers: whatever little time I’ve spent on games so far has pretty good feedback. I played Age of Empires 3 with all the game settings on “maximum”, enabled the shaders, full reflections etc. and the machine did not wince. I played at the maximum resolutions and the display was fantastic.

Great post, thanks AG! Any comments generally on your experience running Vista on the Precision. I worry that some people that have said Vista is painfully slow, after using an XP machine. I am also getting the 4Gigs of Ram plus the X7900 but don’t know whether I should put on XP right away, rather than the Vista supplied. I don’t really do gaming but am hoping the multitasking will be quick (tend to run 7-12 programs at once, flicking between them). Thanks.

  45. Karl L. Gechlik

I can only speak for my XP experience with 2gb of ram but that baby FLEW! I am talking multitasking between Photoshop, Outlook, Word and a gajillion firefox windows.

As for Vista my experiences on all other machines have been less than satisfying. AtA is still leaving its Vista reco @ WAIT! WAIT! WAIT! Them Service packs are on the horizon!!

  46. AG

Thanks for review. I’m about to order the M6300 but not sure which screen. I’m ditching my desktop to save space so very tempted by WUXGA. However worried my video editing package (Sony Vegas) text will be too small to read comfortably. Anyone besides reviewer got any practical experience of WUXGA on 17 inch screen?

  48. Deesnutz

i got my precious on Monday the resolution is great i do alot of photoshop and video editing and i can not be happier. It is really solid and a super sharp display. Like Admin said the screen is shinny but not to shinny

  49. Adrian

Thanks AG and Karl. Well mine will come pre-installed with 32 Vista Business and I have the Dell support upgrade, so hopefully I won’t have too many driver difficulties on the PC itself. Course, it would be nice if I catually had the PC…. Two months from order to delivery for a business grade service is a hard one to swallow.

  50. Tommy

    Bhavya

  51. Tommy

On one more thing. Vista scores are awesome too on this laptop.

My base score is 5.0 (RAM limiting)

and My CPU X7900 doesn’t go to Red(CPU Monitor) how much ever I work. You gotta love this. Up and running in no time. One more disappointment was xtreme is not overclockable which sucks after spending this much money on it. But still the performance is awesome so doesn’t leave much room to complain about.

  52. Karl L. Gechlik

Thanks Tommy! I posted your remarks to the post above. Thanks for coming back! Everyone seems pretty happy now and it was well worth the wait.

I also see you are a happy Vista adopter and I will be migrating 2000 desktops next weekend to it. What is your favorite feature?

  53. Tommy

Vista is much more stable and because the GUI uses separate processor than main no matter how much busy your main CPU is you would get response from GUI. So windows don’t freeze period. I hated frozen windows in XP.

Lot of other features but primarily security elevation and aero are my favourites.

Sure someday Vista would replace XP and also people who think their software is not compatible should check as Vista has XP compatibility mode and I have success running most if not all Games and Software in it.

  54. Mike D

wow Tommy the 3d marks look great. I think im sold. How long if i order now? I am in the USA? Any ideas before I call dell??????

  55. Tommy

I got this in US only. took about a week. But I got all bells and whistles N/WUXGA/X7900 so could be faster in your case.

    Bhavya

  56. Mike D.

would u recomend it like you got it or different? For mostly Photoshop and some gaming? I really like the big bright screen. Do they offer LED?

  57. Anonymous

Hows about a discount Mr Admin? Ask ur buddys at dell to give us a coupon code. How about it?

  58. Tommy

My configuration would make it fly. Also don’t get 4GB as it is not usable in 32 bit OS and very expensive at dell. You can upgrade it later on.
    Bhavya

  59. Colin

Wow can you believe my new ETA is 14th of November? This is my 2nd delay.

I think I am going to have to cancel my order. Absolutely rediculous. I would love to have this computer and all, but right now I just need ANY computer.

I hate Dell. I wish I could sue them for completely screwing my semester by leading me on with false promises.

  60. rhonda

@Colin wow that blows hardcore. have you called cs and tried to get them to do something for you?

  61. Adrian

My EDD was originally 17 Oct and consequemtly moved out to 23 Nov. I called my CSR last week and jumped up and down a bit and he put my M6300 on priority. Now the EDD shows as 13 November, but frankly I don’t trust Dell wrt to delivery as far as I can throw them.

Interestingly, I looked around at other PCs on Friday and at the HP8710w in particular which has had some favourable reviews. As I was so frustrated with Dell, I called up the UK HP Direct line. The guy I spoke with straight off said that there was a minimum delay of at least 3 weeks for the PC. I asked why tis was and he said beacuse the PC was very popular and there were also delays with WUXGA LCDs. He lost interest with me as soon as he realised I was trying to get a PC in “business timescales”. So without a plan B, I guesss I just have to sit tight and wait for the Dell.

@Tommy, glad you feel Vista works with the Dell well. That was my major worry. I have the X7900 with 4GB RAM, so hope I get the same kind of performance as you.

@Colin, know exactly how frustrated you feel! Drives me mad as well. Problem is what else? I mentioned the HP above but even then it doesn’t offer for me the X7900 processor which I have set my heart on. Much as I don’t want to go easy on Dell, I think several other PC manufacturers are caught up in this LCD delay.

  62. Karl L. Gechlik

@Adrian – SO I guess its safe to assume you got vista 64? How many of you went with the 4gb setup?

Were you able to get your CSR to do anything for you? A lil’ something something? I remember reading people getting cases and discounts oh my.

Let us know – inquiring minds need to know.

  63. Tommy

    Adrian and Colin,

Guys You would have your laptops before EDD. My EDD was Nov 8th and now my laptop is already 2 days old :D . Do one thing an I know it helps to speed up with Dell.

Go Online and Chat with CR for order status. I had my CR email me everyday and let me know the status of my order. Let them know that sitting on 4000$ for more than a week is a crime. Get free stuff and have them work for you. Thats what I had and my CR after 2 status emails wrote that my laptop was shipped. Also before I saw the status online change for my order I had my laptop infront of me. Get a next day shipping free.

Hope this helps and the machine is on fire. I do so much multi tasking like burning a DVD/Compressing a huge movie/ Downloading a torrent/ Remote desktops/PDF creation/surfing with 15 windows and multiple tabs/ VMware Virtual machine running XP with 512 RAM and this system is kickass and won’t even go in red. Also it runs cooler than my previous Dell I9300(XPS Gen2 Mod).

  64. Asphyxia

thanks i am going to chat up the csr NOW!

  65. colin

Hey guys, guess what? It’s shipped! I didn’t even have time to call my CSR and throw another fit before it went from production (friday night or something??) to shipped (sunday afternoon)!

I hope it gets here soon… I told my CSR that I was moving out of this appartment on the 31st, so it had to be here before then, and if it didn’t I would give him my new address. If the crappy courier service takes longer I don’t know what I will do. (they use some rubbish Walsh Western International shipping service here in the UK and they subcontract all their deliveries)

Surely it’ll get here by Wednesday (the 31st) though. I think it’s coming from Ireland or something. But I haven’t got my tracking number yet, probably since it’s the weekend.

    I’m pretty excited!

  66. Asphyxia

Its like the Dell godz heard us cause mine is showing shipped. thanks admin!

  67. Adrian

@Karl – Vista32 is what I ordered, would like to try Vista64 but I have way too many programs that (I think) would not run. Always willing to be disproven, however. Thinking about it, I don’t know too much about 64 bit OS, does that mean all my drivers etc have to be 64 bit?

@Tommy – called my CSR today after they lengthened my EDD again (only by a day this time, however). He palmed me off to the general Customer Service line who were worse than useless. Hardly even bother to apologise, seeming to feel that the fact I was in the same bucket as everyone else waiting made it OK. I said I could cancel and the lady seemed more than happy to oblige (in fact I would say she didn’t really give a damn either way…) If I did cancel it seems it would be just to cut off my nose to spite my face and throw a tizzy with Dell, and I think she recognises this. Naturally, I didn’t cancel but I would have appreciated a bit more of an apology. Poor show.

Cheers! Just keeping fingers crossed that things don’t go even more pear shaped…

  68. Karl L. Gechlik

the M6300 supports up to 4GB of DDR2 memory. Dell notes that the M6300 can support the full 4GB (rather than 3GB) due to 36-bit addressing when paired with a 64-bit capable operating system.

To me that means you need to be running the 64bit version of Vista which I haven’t had the chance to fux with just yet. But from my reading it will need different drivers and you may have some issues with the broadcomm gigabit nic.

Also I read Dell does not offer Vista64 becuase it does not fully support it yet – but I could be wrong!

    Anyone?

  69. Anonymous

ty for the 3dmark scores. Mine should be here with 2gb and XP on wednesday. I was told I needed 64 bit os to do 4gb of memoury and it would delay my machine. I went with 2 and if in the future I want to improve I can up the memory and the operating system.

unless i can install the 4gb under xp or vista (thirty two bit) i would like to know also. thankx

  70. Karl L. Gechlik

    From my friends @ dell:

Yes, it is possible to order 4GB of RAM with Vista 32bit. 4GB is the max RAM option on most laptops although 32bit Windows will not recognize all 4GBs Win XP will recognize about 3.5GB and Vista will recognize just under 4GB. We do offer 64bit XP and Vista to get the full 4GBs and maybe even more when larger DIMMs are available.

  71. Adrian

@Colin – did you get it yet, and if so what’s the scoop? Happy or not? Thx

  72. Asphyxia

I just got mine! I will post about it in a lil whilez This is dope it is great.

  73. Adrian

@Asphyxia – excellent news!! Looking forward to hearing how you find it. I’m trying not to think about the prospect of a two week wait still to go (that’s if they don’t delay me again), but it’s hard. I shall have to live life vicariously through you, Karl and Colin until delivery!

  74. Adrian

@Karl or anyone! – I just revisited the UK site for the M6300 and ran through the ordering screens. Vista is now back on as an option (it had disappeared a fortnight ago a couple of weeks after I ordered with only XP offered) but now the highest processor on offer is the T7700. Also it appears that 2GB RAM is the most it can be ordered with (the 4GB upgrade option has disappeared). Any ideas why this would be the case? Could this be indicative of a shortage of X7900 CPUs? Thanks!

  75. Karl L. Gechlik

Adrian that is super strange. I have just emailed my favorite Dell rep and will follow up – prob after tyhe weekend.. Anyone else have any ideas??

Inquiring minds would love to know!

  76. Bigheadperv

hi there long time reader first time poster, those options are available in the us of a still adrian. Can anyone confirm they are still there elsewhere too?

  77. colin

    Hi guys!

So I got my Dell on the 31st. Woulda posted here earlier but that was the day I was moving out of my apartment. Just in time!

I have to say… this machine is awesome. Absolutely fantastic. I love it.

It’s actually not very heavy, I was pretty surprised. The screen is wonderful, the sound quality is good, the keyboard is nice, the trackpad is good (especially the middle button on there. brilliant!)

In terms of game performance, it’s a beast. I can play the Crysis demo at 1024×768 with some settings on high, and a few on medium, which is actually pretty impressive. I quickly bought Orange Box on Steam, and fired up Portal and Team Fortress 2. No problems there. They aren’t system killers like Crysis, but they sure look good on this screen with all the effects turned up. I’m impressed with the performance of the 1600m.

I was in the process of downloading 3dmark, but I’m on a slower connection while I wait for my broadband to be moved to my new place. I’ll hopefully get it soon… but the server I was downloading from wouldn’t let me resume for some reason. Anyway we already saw those scores.

As Karl mentioned… the wireless performance is excellent. I don’t know what magic they use but the signal strength is really good. I get a good connection with this thing when my fujitsu-seimens is completely out of range.

I got the 7200rpm hard drive in mine, and it’s pretty fast. Definitely see an improvement in so many areas–work, gaming, and general use.

I can’t say enough good things about it. It’s really just a great, solid machine. If there was ANYTHING I would want to change about it, I would prefer maybe a keyboard with a numpad, since there seems to be quite a bit of extra room on the sides. Don’t their new Inspirons have that? (but I guess that would kind of force you to do most of your typing on the leftish side of the laptop, which might not be that great)

The keyboard itself is pretty far back, but it actually gives you a nice resting place for your wrists once you get used to the ergonomics. That’s actually pretty nice to have if you’re using the laptop on your lap, which is entirely possible given that it is fairly light, and doesn’t get too hot. (I used to have an Acer Ferrari… that thing would burn.)

I haven’t run any battery life tests on it, but it seems pretty good considering the large screen and high-end components. Probably 3 hours for web browsing if you turn the brightness down a bit.

Overall, I’m happy. Brilliant machine that lets me game and work.

Hows your order coming along Adrian? I have to admit I was pretty peeved to be in that situation considering it was a business order too… but in the end I only waited just over 4 weeks. Perhaps they are also experiencing problems getting those high-end CPUs on top of everything else… it’s a pity. But after all the time you’ve invested already waiting is the smart thing. :P

  78. Karl L. Gechlik

Great review Colin! I kinda miss the big guy among all my little itty bitty laptops.

Which Fujistu do you have? I am in the market for something new…

  79. Adrian

@Colin – sadly, no news to uddate you with. Despite the daily voodoo ritual each time I return to the status page it still shows an EDD of 14 Nov. If it actually comes though that will be a 6 week wait. I can only assume I went for the quad whammy of X7900, 4GB RAM, WUXGA and a/g/n card and I guess any one of those may be holding this up. As I mentioned in an earlier post when I “threatened” to cancel the order, they seemed pretty blase about this and were quite happy to cancel it. What a way to rn a business service.

@Karl – be v interested to hear any feedback from Dell. Strkes me they may be removing the parts that would likely delay an order. But then you can still order the WUXGA, so I may be wrong there.

@bigheadperv – I presume that the US gets the first call on parts (I may well be wrong here). Beginning to think I would have been wiser to order from the US – if you can actually do that and get it shipped to the UK, but they would probably insist you have to go via your own region.

  80. Tommy

    Guys,

Bad news. I have ordered a replacement for my M6300. The one I got memory card reader doesn’t work and so does the finger print reader. Nothing show stopper. I am working on it right now and it works good but just to bring quality control at Dell. How can they mess this up. the laptop is so wonderful. May be they would do it right this time.

  81. Karl L. Gechlik

They don’t work?? How strange is that? I bet its just a cable unplugged inside! BUT please keep up posted Tommy – everyone wants to make sure you get a new and not refurbed model!

  82. Adrian

@Tommy – what a pain, mate. The HDD is a really easy swap in the M6300, so I guess worse case is you carry on as normal until the replacement PC arrives and then just swap the HDDs around. I would think it would be transparent as far as Msoft software would be concerned as the PC would be effectively the same PC (bar different MAC code for the wireless card etc). I assume that Dell are at least going to allow you to keep the old one until the new one arrives….that would only be fair.

  83. colin

Adrian: My EDD was 14th Nov too. But then it went from production to shipped in like two days, and got here three days later. So don’t give up hope yet.

Karl: I just had some rubbish Amilo Pi 1500 series. I got it cheap because my Acer Ferrari 4005’s motherboard died in the middle of an intense semester, so I needed a quick over-the-counter notebook to finish my work with! Also, I wanted to wait until the DirectX 10 parts came out before investing real money in a new notebook. Glad I waited.

Anyway I gave the old one to my mom as soon as I got the Dell.

In other news, my friend’s laptop screen just got busted… and he saw on craigslist UK some guy selling a new XPS 1730 fully kitted, for like 300 pounds. Sounds a bit suspicious doesn’t it? I wonder…

  84. NinjaAdmin

Colin – 1 rule of thumb if it sounds too good to be true. it is.

    nuff said.

Either a crack head selling stolen goods or someone looking to beat you over the head.

But Im glad to hear how much u r liking the 6300. I got a lot riding on this machine.

  85. Tommy

    Thanks guys,

I confirmed that I am getting a brand new laptop and not refurb and it would take same amount of time like a new laptop.

More over my memory card is working but the slot lock doesn’t work so thats motherboard replacement.

Fingerprint reader is detected by OS but not by the software installed. I tried many things but no luck.

    Good luck to all

  86. optimitza.cat

It’s very nice to have so much info here about the M6300! I can’t find many reviews out there.

I run a site about laptops (http://optimitza.com) and I would like to put the M6300. Tommy already posted 3DMark06 scores, but I need PCMark05 ones too (for the same config).

Would you mind posting them? I think others will be interested too.

  87. Karl L. Gechlik

@Adrian here is the response from dell regarding the inavaliability of those options for your uk order:

Karl, sorry I missed this email I was on the road last week. Not sure what happened, maybe a website problem but it appears to be fixed now.

So it looks like it was just a glitch.

@optimitza.cat Feel free to repost any of our information from AskTheAdmin – just remember to give credit with a full link to the information!

email me for more information at info at asktheadmin dot com

  88. Adrian

@Karl – thanks for chasing that up and passing the comment on. It’s a little strange – half the time when you hit the “customise” button on the M6300 page on the UK site (either selecting Vista or XP) it comes up with a page not found and it also seems to depend on whether you go in the small business or large business entrance page. Anyhow, i REALLY hope this is a worry I don’t need to focus on…

My Dell status page now shows that its in production. Who-hoo, er… it does say that it’s been in production since the 25/10 tho, so I’m not sure what to make of this. I’m pretty sure that when I went there yesterday it still said it was in pre-production so hopefully it’s just a glitch on the status page and indeed it is actually getting assembled “Hey, Eddie, pass the hammer this CPU just don’t wanna sit proper”. No doubt some higher power is going to make me regret that jibe…

I’ll let you know if I get the PC on or before the promised date (14/11). Just can’t wait!

  89. Tommy

    Folks Need help.

My New laptop came and I switched HDD and works fine. One more hurdle. The new laptop came with intel4965 rather than my 1505 Draft N. I don’t know what to do. Should I change it? Which one is better. I found that intel is better on lot of sites by googling. My limited experience says 1505 is better and it is more expensive too. Any Recomendations?

  90. Tommy

Need one more favour. I have memory stick pro duo and it doesn’t work in my new laptop also. I checked the specs and it says MS Pro is supported. DUO is just an adapter (bigger one) and it works in my older Inspiron E1405. Can anybody see if their laptop has this working. PLz Plz. Need help folks. Also people who had blazing Wireless was that 4965 or 1505 ?

    Thanks,
    Bhavya

  91. Adrian

Wish I could help, Tommy. But still no delivery. Hope you get it sorted out though. Cheers.

Hi there, well my PC has moved to Delivery Preparation. There is also a packing slip link which lists out the parts packed to be shipped. On it are the usual entries like:

    1 W10M62 – M6300 ADVANCED October 200-50772
    1 M6300 X7900 2.8Ghz 4Mbwithout finger print reader 210-18974

    But further on there is:
1 ZZZ do not order supply issue Intel 4965 Wireless card – EMEA 555-11174

Any ideas what this means? It isn’t supplied, or is? Any others get the same sort of message on their packing slips? Thanks!

Is the M6300 now ok with Vista Ultimate 64 bit ?

Or does one still have to hunt for drivers, etc.

    Thanks,
    Laurence

  94. Adrian

    Hi all,

It finally arrived on Monday. Although I would have appreciated more handholding and explanations for the lengthy delay in delivering the PC, rather than having to deal with a succession of people, who although obviously desperately wishing they could expedite my order for delivery the following day, had their hands tied and could do little more than apologise, the Precision is a cracking product.

It is certainly everything that I was hoping for; its looks may not be to everyone’s taste but for a business environment it’s just perfect. The PC in particular is much lighter than I thought it was going to be, its ports are numerous (e.g. 6 x USB) and well laid out, the screen is terrific, it’s very fast, the docking station that I purchased to go with it works a treat and the business support line was great. I have only had to make one call so far and the chap I spoke with was knowledgeable, friendly, sorted out my problem in a heartbeat and happily chatted about the machine for another 20 minutes after that answering some additional general questions I had.

I nearly cancelled my order with Dell and purchased an HP instead, but I’m really glad that I didn’t. I couldn’t be happier in fact, it’s a great piece of kit and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. I use speech recognition all the time (Dragon NaturallySpeaking) and this machine has improved my accuracy no end and just makes mincemeat of the processing that DNS requires. Excellent! Cheers to all!

  95. Karl L. Gechlik

@Anon We can point you to the drivers if you want to make the jump.

Adrian I am so glad to hear you got your 6300! We have been rooting for you the whole time.

I wish you would have got it sooner but I bet you will appreciate her a little more now :) Sort of like working up an appetite except this was straight torture!

  96. José Miguel

    Hi there,

Everybody seems quite pleased with your M6300s, right? So come on and leave your feedbacks. I just ordered mine – was able to get a really good bargain as they had it on a Smart Value promotion at the dell.pt (Portugal) site – Something like a 7500/2Gb/7k2-160GB/WUXGA for 1600Eur. EDD is November 28th. But it’s umbelievable how this machine is so looked after everywhere, but has so little feedback – this is the (only) place I found more people talking about it – but latelly no one has given additional input on this subject… Come on guys, lets all know more about how much satisfied are you with your new machines.

    Cheers,

    Miguel Barroso, Lisbon PT

  97. 0scarr

great to hear from Portugal! We are loving ours JOSE what do u want to know abouts it?

  98. Miguel Barroso

Any input is welcome, but you can start by the screen, it was said that the WUXGA screen its better than a Sony desktop LCD – is this really so? I normally find Sony LCDs as a reference in terms os LCD quality. Is the M6300 a dual lamp design?
As for the Keyboard, I was very relutant in buying this notebook because it hadn’t a keypad – I work a lot in AutoCAD, always inputing distances and coordinates – but desided to jump anyway, and go for an external keypad (like so, it willl rest on the left side, wich will be more convenient, since I normally type numbers with my left hand). I’ve read that the absence of the keypad, translates into a more confortable keyboard… – any thoughts on both of this? As for benchmarks, I would also like to see it compared with other workstations, in SpecPerf, and other professional aplications. I know that most of you guys are just regular computer users, and not hardware reviewrs, but leave you likes and deslikes regarding this notebook.
    Cheers,

    Miguel Barroso, Lisbon PT

  101. Ofer

    Hi friends,

I ordered an M6300 T7700 2.40 GHz on 9-25-2007 from a dealer here in Israel… was supposed to get it within 21 days… on 10-21-2007 I received a message that the order has been delayed, and will only ship on 11-27-2007… last week on 11-23-2007 I got a message that the computer has not been shipped yet, and probably will not be shipped any time soon. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing — can anyone tell me what could cause this to
happen, and if they’ve heard of similar situations in the past?

Does anyone know how I can contact Dell directly to see what’s going on here?

  102. Karl L. Gechlik

@Ofir – As you can see above lots of people had issues with waits on the 6300. Mostly out of the US. Normally CS can expedite or offer a similar machine with less options or other options that can ship asap.

I am forwarding along your request to our Dell rep and they will stop by and try to assist you. If you want to try to follow up today call Dell Preferred support @ (800) 234-9999.

Shoot me an email at info at asktheadmin dot com and i will fwd it along.

And Miguel thanks for the input!

  103. Ofer

    Thanks Karl,
I sent you an e-mail, I hope we will manage to shed some light on the issue…

  104. Miguel Barroso

It was too good to be true… I’m such a bummer – I misread the EDD… it’s not de November 28th, but December 28th!!!! ARGH… When I talked with my Dell account manager, she told me that the normal waiting time was around 10-12 days, so that I though the would end up beeing November 25-27 timeframe… I looked at my order and only read the 28… never though it would be in other month… Just sent an email to my account manager, lets see what she has to say… :-\

When using battery power can the M6300 use integrated graphics instead of the power hungry dedicated graphics ?

Several notebooks now have this power saving option.

    Thanks,
    Laurence

  106. Miguel Barroso

Good news… my laptop has been dispatched… I contacted my Account manager the other day, and she told me that she would ask that my order to be prioritized – well, last night it was waiting for pick up, and today is already on transit… I’ll be receiving it probably in the middle of next week – Like we say here in Portugal “quem nao chora nao mama” (if you don’t cry, you won’t get milk)..

About the integrated graphics… I don’t think that there is a need to have 2 graphics cards, since nowadays, every card will throttle down when processing power is not needed – i guess that in the case of the M6300 power management is very well achieved, since the benchmarks presented by the notebookjournal review, give this laptop the best result ever on a 17″ machine (in terms of battery run time)

  107. Jose

That is great to hear. I am calling my csr right now. I want vip service to! make sure u come back and tell us about your 6300! let me live through you.

  108. Liam Descoteaux

I received my M6300, and just got the power cord that they forgot to send along with it.

My question is this.. has anyone attempted to format this bad boy and put on a nice clean OS?… one without all the Dell-isms? I have not had a chance to really look at the laptop yet, and I wonder if there is the ol proprietary hidden partition for the drivers…

    thoughts?

  109. Anonymous

not sure how I missed it in the comments by AG, but it answered my question…

  110. JayCee

I just got mine and i LOVE IT!

  111. Miguel Barroso

I’ve received mine last tuesday… this baby is awsome (yes, i’m talking about a computer :P )

Very satisfied with it, this is rock solid construction. Fast as i’ve never seen in a laptop recently… very responsive, even with vista.

One thing – I can’t seem to be able to make the figerprint reader work – the software runs, but says that there is no fingerprint hardware, although is present in the device manager… anyone else with this problem?

  112. Commodore

We will work on figuring that out for you. Stay tuned…

  113. Miguel Barroso

    Win Vista 32bits

  114. Karl L. Gechlik

Ours worked out of the box – but since I don’t have the machine any longer I can’t try it :(

But I would suggest contacting tech support. If you want us to trouble shoot I would suggest starting with the error log after you try looking for it. Have you tried removing it and reinstalling it in device manager?

    Reader AG Said:

Setting up the fingerprint in Vista was a little challenge as the suite to configure the prints etc. (Security by Wave Systems) kept crashing. Once we install this Wave Systems suite, it takes over the Windows authentication protocol, and gives an option on how the user wants to authenticate. To make a long story short, after several installs/uninstalls, fingerprint reader chip driver rollback, spy ware software un-installation etc., I got it to work. By the time it worked, I forgot the successful sequence of events.

  115. Miguel Barroso

well, here are some more developments regarding the fingerprint reader. Until now, I had only noticed the AuthenTec Truprint icon in Control Panel (the one that says that “No sensors found”). In Device Manager, the sensor is identified as TouchChip Fingerprinter CoProcessor.
But then, I found that there is another software suite intalled in Windows, called Security by Wave Systems. I was able to configure in order to logon to Windows, but it seems that if I want to use the fingerprint reader so that I can logon into internet pages and so, I must activate TPM in BIOS…. well, I don’t want to activate the TPM chip, as it turns on excessive security policies. Is there a way to use the fingerprint reader without the TPM chip active?

  116. Miguel Barroso

    arghhhhhhh… what a nightmare…
For the last hours I thought that my computer had died… I activated the preboot logon with the fingerprint reader… then turned off the computer, and went out… when I came back home again, it wouldn’t pass post… I tried everything, it didn’t even enter the BIOS setup… nothing… using the Diagnostics boot mode (Fn+powerbutton) ended with a “System board componente is faulty” – all three lock leds blinking)… after hundreds of attempts, removing every easy acess component, I decided to lift the keyboard, and noticed the cable coming from the sensor… humm let me take this out… voilá… asked me for the system password, and there I was in BIOS setup… removed the System password, entered windows… shutdown, connected the fingerprint sensor, and is working again! let me say that I not very happy with the way all this fingerprint related stuff is happening… I’m just so glad that the machine is working again, that I think I will leave the fingerprints in the keyboard for now, not in the sensor :P

  117. Karl L. Gechlik

Wow Miguel that sounds like a horrible experience! I believe there are 3rd party password management applications that would work with out the chip set. Let me look into this a little further for you and give you a shout back.

    Anyone else know the answer?

  118. Anonymous

I couldnt get my fp reader to work properly either. little help?

  119. Sam

Anyone with a X7900 2.8GHZ Extreme cpu tried overclocking this baby since it’s multiplier is unlocked? I’m just wondering if changing the multiplier is available in the bios like when overclocking the same cpu using the dell XPS M1730.

  120. Tommy

Not possible to overclock with bios only. Already checked with Customer service too. Waste of x7900 money but well still fast enough

  121. Sam

That sucks, there must be a way to do it, I mean it would be awesome to run this baby at 3.4GHZ when doing very cpu intensive stuff…

Please let me know if anyone has had any progress with overclocking their x7900

  122. Remko

I also had the problem with the fingerprint reader. After installing the software, the laptop died (well 2 of them actually). Dell sent over a technican who replaced 2 mainboards. Now they told me this problem is related to the A01 BIOS. Either flas back to A00 or wait until A02 comes out (should be this week).
I haven’t tried it yet, but it should work. I guess I’ll try it this weekend, because I need my laptop this week.

    Remko

that fixed me up! thank you remko!

  124. Albeit

Thank you for the finger printer fix! it worked good for me to after i flash the bios it works! horay!

  125. CROiga

Hi guys, I just placed an order to my M6300, and I went to the best config available, extreme processor, 4 Gigs of ram , too bad that there`s no better gx option available for M6300…

Initially I ordered M90 with 3500m, but I find myself waiting 4 months in vain , so I replaced my order with a brand new M6300…

can`t wait to lay my hands on this baby…

ps. my primary work is 3d modeling and animation in Maya, and that`s why I was so keen to order M90 with stronger graphic instead

I know there`re still not posts on the net about M6300 and it`s performance in Maya, but I`ll keep you posted when I got mine

  126. Karl L. Gechlik

Great to hear the comments still coming in! Anyone else have any good or bad experiences with the M6300?

  127. CROiga

Hi Karl, thanks for a fast reply,…
I have a question for you, or maybe some other could reply…

As I was waiting so long for my M90 the guy in Dell (it`s a local store – yes there are some in my country LOL)gave me a brand new out of the box Dell Latitude D830 15.4″ 1920×1200 Wuxga, T7500, 2Gb ram,…as replacement till my order gets here…
It`s bundled with all the widgets, and win vista 32bit.

The problem I confronted is that after some time of using the wireless connection to my ADSL router, the Intel PRO wireless 3945 card just stop working, and I find it impossible to connect again without rebooting,… I tried connecting using PCMCA Dlink wireles card and it doesn`t seem to have the same problem,….

Is this a win problem or maybe the card itself,…..
I`m asking this cos I ordered the same wireless as part of my new M6300

    thanks for your help

  128. Ofer

I ordered an M6300 back in October 2007 — it was supposed to arrive within 21 days… after two months of waiting, with no new confirmed date of delivery, I canceled my order (Dell seems to be in some type of serious supply problems).
I purchased an IBM T61p instead — (only draw-back is the size of the screen not being 17″), other than that it is an excellent computer — I’m running SolidWorks and Pro/E on it, and am very pleased… and this computer arrived within 14 days days exactly as promised!

  129. CROiga

Ofer, can you tell us what was the actual T61p config, and have you tried running Maya on this machine?

  130. Ofer

    64608YG
    see following link:
    http://www5.pc.ibm.com/europe/products.nsf/$wwwPartNumCompare/_NH38Zxx?OpenDocument&compare=NH38Yxx

haven’t tried running Maya on it, but I imagine if it runs SW and Pro/e, it shouldn’t have a problem running Maya. There is a 3D settings preset specifically for running Maya on the video card (among many other 3D packages), so that it is supported. IBM is a much better build than Dell, has much better support, more reliable, and they don’t jones you on replacement parts (such as batteries etc.) — see the promos for the computer, they stand behind every word.

  131. Karl L. Gechlik

@Ofer – Would love to hear a detailed review on your new machine… Any interest in sharing your experiences with our readers?

Been thinking about what to get next for a lappie!

  132. Ofer

Karl, I’ve only had the computer for a couple of weeks, so I haven’t had the opportunity to put it through extremely difficult task like running very large assemblies. If there are some bench marking tests you’d like me to run on the computer, let me know where I can find them and I’d be happy to run them and post the results.
One problem I ran into was SW freezing up every once in a while. What appeared to be a problem with the video card drivers, turned out to be a problem with the Microsoft mouse software. I uninstalled the software and the computer returned to running just fine. I was surprised to find that the mouse software could cause the computer to freeze up, but apparently this is not an uncommon problem (especially with 3D packages, and especially with Microsoft mice…)

  133. Karl L. Gechlik

I dont really care about Benchmarks as much as usablilty – likes and dislikes. THings that make you either love or hate the machine.

Good old fashioned bashing or ranting/raving :)

When ever you get a chance hit me up.

  134. CROiga

I got this information from a guy in Dell, but since I haven`t seen something similar before I have to assume that this info is not yet released in public…

    “M6300 with 256MB FX1600 outperforms M90 with 512MB FX3500 in all key ISV applications”

  135. Anonymous

I have received my M6300 allmost 2 weeks ago.

    My M6300 config:

    1440×900 non-glare screen
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 2.4GHz
    4 GB memory
    200 GB 7200rpm disk
    DVD Writer
    Intel AGN network adapter
    Bluetooth
    (Without fingerprint reader)
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit

I selected Vista Ultimate 32 bit instead of 64 bit because some of the programs I daily use still have issues with 64 bit (i.e. Visual Studio 2008). WIth Vista 32 bit I can use 3.581 GB of the full 4 GB memory.

I selected the 1440×900 screen resolution because this is the optimal resolution for a 17″ screen when doing a lot text-based work (programming) and browsing. A higher resolution makes fonts much smaller and much harder to read especially when using the system for daily work.
I went for non-glare because it reduces eye-strain in most (normal/office) conditions.

I do not really miss the numerical keypad. The keyboard is now nicely centered with the screen which is more balanced.

    Experiences/opinions:

    PRO’s:

    -Good quality build.

    -Good performance.

-The keyboard is really good for a notebook: the keys require just enough strength to be pressed (not too soft) and the keyboard does not bend at all.

-DVI connector (in addition to VGA)

-Placement of connectors is well thought-out. Power, video, network and most of the USB connectors are all on the back nicely out of site and not conflicting with your mouse. And Memory card, cardreader audio and 2 USB ports are on the sides for easy access.

    CON’s:

    -Very disappointing LCD screen:
‘Non-glare’ is actually more like semi-glare.
I have (almost) never seen a lcd screen which such narrow viewing angles (the vertical viewing angle is actually too small for normal use).
The problem is: when the upper part of the screen is OK then the bottom part is too light. If I tilt the screen until the lower part is ok then the upper part is way too dark.
If the upper left corner is ok then the bottom right side is all shadowed etc.
If I move my head just a little then large part of the screen changes intensity, looks washed-out and a little unsharp.
If you prefer a good quality notebook screen then don’t buy the M6300 (at least not with this screen).
This system is targeted at CAD users but this screen is actually very unsuitable for real graphics work.

    -No built-in microphone.

-No possibility to record audio output channel.

-Currently the audio is distorted when playing music. I tried several quality headphones but the problem stays. It sounds like there is some ‘hall’ effect added to the audio which changes/distorts the signal (fluctuations in volume/phase): absolutely unsuitable for normal listening to music and mp3’s.
Dell support is still looking into this (I installed the latest BIOS and Audio driver whitout any improvement).
I compared with my older Dell Latitude which does not have these problems.
I sure hope this is a bug they can fix otherwise the audio is usable for beeps and voice only, but not music.

Does any of you have experienced the same problems with the audio?

    - I am still unable to put the system in sleep mode. If I try it allways hibernates. Dell is still looking into this.

    - Bigger to carry around than I expected, but for me it’s worth it.

    - The system looks somewhat dull, it does not have a modern design.

Although the M6300 is a powerfull notebook, for it’s price you might expect at least a quality screen and quality audio features.

    Hi guys,
I received my M6300 yesterday and I did a few benchmarks as promised…

    few thoughts first:
I love the screen,… (WUXGA 1920×1200 non glare)very bright, suitable also for outside work, almost zero reflection, highly recommended

Keyboard, only one word – great, it would be nice if the people in Dell integrated keypad, but I wont cry about it…

Noise level: what noise,.. it`s so quiet, even with all fans working full

heat: no problem also,.. even after one hour of hard benchmarking it was cold as ice, a few degrees above room temperature

I read on some forums about whine noise coming from inside notebook ( various Dell models), I locked myself in toilet with M6300 and heard nothing (I was listening for 20 minutes)

the looks: some says it`s ugly, but I love it,…

CONS: nothing really , ok,.. they could put the microphone in the unit

    and now the benchmarks:

Cinebench 10 (render time with both cores was 2:44)

    SPECviewperf 10 (Vsync OFF)

  138. I just received my M6300 a week ago.

    My M6300 config:

I purchased this laptop to be able to mount 4 operating systems on top of VM Workstation in odrder to run demo’s for clients.

So far I only have 2 complaints:
    1. There is an intermittent chirping noise from the speakers
    2. The video card fan seems to come on and off once in a while making quite some noise.

    Apart from that it rocks.
